animal cruelty comics

the first one is this one of the fox pulling the skin off of a human. this comic is quite graphic, so although i want to get the same message across i feel like doing something like this is a bit too extreme. i want to be able to be subtle but also keep with my visual signature of cutesy drawings. however it was interesting to see drawings like this because they really make you think. what if it was the other way around? i am really interested in this idea and have been exploring it in my visual journal.

i found this next image on my Pinterest account. i think it is really interesting bringing to attention the actions of humans without any subtlety. sometimes being frank about your message is important too. i think i need to consider this when drawing in my sketchbook how sometimes being honest and not subtle is just as powerful as beating around the bush.

On the other foot:

this next image that i found really showcases the aesthetic of what i am hoping that my drawings achieve. i want to keep my cute aesthetic but also have serious messages within. i also found this image on pinterest, which i have found has been a useful tool when trying to find inspiration like this.

larry torro

larry torro is an animal activist and artist who i have discovered recently. his images focus on turning the tables on humans, what if it was the other way around? this idea is really interesting to me. although his art has a different aesthetic and a very different visual signature from mine, i think taking inspiration from these images is still important. it's interesting to see an artist using photographs and realism to portray his message.

cop first manipulations

I have begun to manipulate my work on Photoshop to put together some different concepts and designs to get a better grasp of my work.

I really like how this one turned out. It is supposed to be in the style of Pamela Anderson's PETA advertisement. I think it turned out really well. I didn't do too many manipulations other than adding the text and taking away the background. I really enjoyed copying the PETA poster in my own way and style and i think i will do a few more of these in the future.

These two posters I made I really enjoyed too. I think the first one with the 'Badness Level' has more of the message that i wanted to express, that humans are the cause of the hunting and murder of animals. I also wanted the message to come across that it's bad. I think the aesthetic also looks quite naive and childlike so it makes it more emotive, as if a child has done it, taking inspiration from the Lilo and Stitch movie. I think using these familiar themes, similar to how Banksy works, gives across the point i want to express.

I also made the second pattern, slightly out of just wanting to do it because i really enjoy patterns and also to show the enormity of the subject. Repetition is one of the key points of propaganda as defined by the IPA, so i wanted to incorporate this into my work.

I also wanted to manipulate this one too because i think the image is really powerful. I wanted to clean out the background and also add more blood splatters for dramatic effect. I used a watercolour effect to keep that hand-drawn imagery in tact.

sketchbook

some of the beginnings of my sketchbook when i think my ideas are starting to all come together.

although one of the first drawings that i did, i think it set the stage and tone for what i want to achieve with my sketchbook and journal. the bear has a complacent expression, this is to insinuate that there is nothing that the bear can do, he isnt struggling, because he knows this is his fate and what happens in our society. i want this to envoke sadness to the viewer that the bear has lost hope.

i think this drawing is really powerful and raw. i wanted to express the emotion and i wanted people to see it reversed and be shocked. i think this drawing is also my starting point, where my journal has really started taking form of the ideas i want to portray.

not sure about these, they were kind of a mindless doodle that i don't think really fits my journal.

with these two i wanted to portray a childlike, naive aesthetic. i want the viewer to think that a child had done these drawings, insinuating that even a child knows that we are what is wrong with the world. we are the 'bad' in the world. i think having this naive theme is really effective for my work.

a little drawing about politicians after being influenced by the ongoings of the world. i think this drawing is quite ironic when you relay it to my theme, as politicians are the ones that are killing the foxes and here i am insinuating that they are foxes. almost like i am saying that the politicans are killing their own kind, which they are. we all belong on the world together.

some little collages that i did after reading through a newspaper and being influenced by the headings. i think college is something that i dont really try often, and i am not really that into it. i dont know why, it just isnt for me. but at least i tried, eh?

however, i do like the second image with 'change a life' because i think that it has a powerful message.

again with the insinuating that the politicians are foxes. i'm not exactly sure where my essay is going yet, so i'm just trying out lots of different ideas.

really love how these turned out! it was my first time using copics and i think the effect is stunning. i think this message is powerful, it insinuates that we are the same as animals, we have all the same parts. would you eat a human like you would an animal? some may say whats the difference? theyre both meat.

visual journal proposal

COP Proposal

The question that I have chosen is ‘What role does Illustration play in times of political and social upheaval’. There are many things that I would like to do with my journal, I want to experiment more and use political and social themes. I don’t just want to focus on war or anything like that I want to get into more issues like animal cruelty and feminism, etc. I think just because my essay is about propaganda & animal cruelty it doesn’t mean that I just have to draw pictures of war and hatred. I can also follow themes such as rebellion, which I can portray by doing things like colouring out of the line, which could be seen as an artist’s way of showing rebellion. I also want to make sure that I am doing different ways of doing illustration, not just pencil drawings but doing some other experimentation as well. I would like to try out some collage work as I am really interested in this and would like to develop my skills in this area more. I want to have fun with this brief and not just feel like I’m drawing guns and soldiers, so I want to go out of the box with this subject and make it my own.
